Keynote speaker Bethany Nowviskie directs digital scholarship activities at the University of Virginia Library, including the Scholars’ Lab. She also works as associate director of the Mellon-funded Scholarly Communication Institute, chairs the MLA’s Committee on Information Technology, and serves as vice president of the Association for Computers and the Humanities.

This plenary address probes what is missing from our engagement, as humanities scholars, with the locative technologies and geographical information systems that are all around us – and that are (perversely and precisely) almost nowhere in the interpretive games we play with texts. Can a schoolgirl from 1820s New England help us chart the path to a 21st-century literary GIS?
