CWRC Launch and Workshop September 2011

The Canadian Writing Research Collaboratory (CWRC) celebrated its project launch on September 29th, 2011 at Alumni House at the University of Alberta, with over eighty guests including scholars from across Canada and dignitaries from the university, government, and non-profit communities.  Featured readings by writers Shawna Lemay and Aritha van Herk (both graduates of the University of Alberta) were preceded by opening remarks from Steve Vossos, Director of Research Capacity Planning, Ministry of Advanced Education and Technology; George Pavlich, Associate Vice-President (Research); and Lesley Cormack, Dean of Arts. The launch was sponsored by the Vice-President (Research), the Office of Interdisciplinary Studies, and the Canadian Literature Centre/Centre de literature canadienne.

The launch was followed by a two-day, hands-on project workshop, sponsored by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council, in which scholars, graduate students, and writers evaluated tool and interface prototypes and helped guide the project’s priorities.  The workshop featured a keynote by Laura Mandell, Director of the Initiative for Digital Humanities, Media, and Culture at Texas A&M University, titled “D3: Digital Media, Distant Reading, and Discipline,” which can be viewed by clicking here.
